Khalilzad due in India to brief authorities on peace progress

KABUL: The US Special Envoy for Afghanistan Reconciliation

Zalmay Khalilzad will make his second visit to India for consultations on

Afghan peace, starting from Monday, Indian media reported Monday. 

Khalilzad is expected to brief Indian authorities about the

progress made in the peace efforts in the past few months, the report said.



Last time Khalilzad visited India in January. According to the report,

Khalilzad is likely to meet India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and

Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale.

Khalilzad is leading efforts by the Trump administration to

end the war by facilitating US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan and busy with

the 6th round of direct talks with the Taliban in Doha.

The last time Khalilzad visited Indian in January when India

conveyed to him that there was a need to protect the existing structure in

Afghanistan and to also not insist on the formation of an interim government.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s term expires this month.

India is keen to hear from Khalilzad on his meetings with his Russian and

Chinese counterparts last month. Khalilzad is leading efforts by the Trump

administration to end the war by facilitating US troop withdrawal from
