Alice Wells Meets with President Ghani, Abdullah

U.S. State Department Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Alice Wells arrived Sunday in Kabul to participate in the opening of the U.S.-Afghan civilian assistance review, US embassy in Kabul said in a statement.

During her visit, Wells will meet with stakeholders of the September 28 Presidential Elections to learn about ongoing preparations and underscore U.S. commitment to a transparent and efficient presidential elections process.

On Sunday, ambassador Wells met with president Ghani at the presidential palace (Arg) and discussed US-Afghan civilian assistance review to promote strong governance and self-reliance as proposed by president Ghani in his letter to US president Donald Trump.

“(They) discussed the peace process, preparations for the upcoming presidential elections, the importance of holding the elections in September, and the results of the consultative Loya Jirga on peace,” Arg said in a statement.

During a separate meeting with CEO Abdullah Abdullah, she stressed U.S. support for timely, credible elections in September.

Ambassador Wells will also meet with men and women from civil society to hear their views on peace and reaffirm U.S. support for a peaceful, stable Afghanistan.
