Afghanistan discussed in meeting between NATO chief, UK PM

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and British Prime Minister Theresa May discussed also prospects for peace and counter-terrorism in Afghanistan when they met in London on Tuesday.

“The Secretary General and the Prime Minister further discussed prospects for peace in Afghanistan, and highlighted the importance of training local forces in partner countries in the fight against terrorism,” NATO said in a statement.

During the meeting, Stoltenberg thanked the UK for its major contributions to NATO missions including Afghanistan.

A statement issued by the UK government also said that the sides noted NATO’s important role in combating terrorism, particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“The Secretary General thanked the UK for its contribution to training, capacity building and other counter-terrorism programmes in the region. They both agreed on the importance of achieving a sustainable peace deal in Afghanistan that prioritises human rights,” the statement said.
