17 May 2019 The Khaama Press News Agency

The parliament of

Taiwan on Friday passed a bill in a landmark vote to legalise same-sex

marriage, becoming the first Asian state to give the same-sex couples to

legally marry.

Thousands of people

mainly comprising of gay rights supporters had gathered outside the parliament

of Taiwan in Taipei during the debate in which three possible bills were

debated.

Two of the bills were

presented by conservative groups that referred to same-sex as ‘civilian-unions’

or ‘family relations rather than marriage which were both rejected.

The successful bill

which was passed by the parliament was tabled by the government and backed by

gay rights campaigners, giving limited adotpion rights for same-sex.

This comes as the

constitutional court had earlier ruled that gay couple had the right to legally

marry and had given parliament two years to come up with legislation on

same-sex marriage.
