The United States is now pursuing our peace plan, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said on Thursday.

“The US is now pursuing our plan, not any other plan… this is because we have a principled stance,” Ghani said addressing Ulema Council at the presidential palace.

“I am not a willow that is shaken. I have surrendered myself to Allah and I will not bow to anyone else. I am ready for any sacrifice for the country… Death is constantly with me, but I don’t think about it even for a second,” he said.

Referring to his order to release 887 Taliban prisoners as a gesture of goodwill for peace, Ghani said that for the first time the group has accepted that those who are being released are their prisoners.

“It may carry risk, but I am sure that most of them will be peace ambassadors not continue fighting,” Ghani said. “It is necessary that we create an atmosphere of trust.”

On presidential election scheduled for September, Ghani reiterated that peace and election are not countering each other.

“Peace will come, but a matter which has taken 40 years needs engineering. It is not about jumping without any calculation of the size of the ditch and then sink in the ditch. Sometimes patience and deliberation produces bigger outcomethan negative hastiness,” Ghani said.
