England vs Afghanistan - Cricket World Cup LIVE: Follow the action

18 Jun 2019 Daily Mail Online

England are looking to take another step towards the Cricket World Cup semi-finals when they take on Afghanistan at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Eoin Morgan's side, who have won three of their first four group games, will take top spot from Australia with victory over Afghanistan.

But they will have to do so without Jason Roy - the opener is set to be out for England's next two matches after he suffered a hamstring tear.

Follow all the action as it happens with Sportsmail's Daniel Matthews, with Paul Newman and Lawrence Booth providing updates from Old Trafford.

2 overs: England 11-0 (Vince 9, Bairstow 2)

James Vince hits the ground running, but he's helped by some fairly generous bowling from Dawlat Zadran.

The seamer is too slow to bowl short but he does so anyway. First Bairstow gets off the mark with a flick off his legs and Vince then pulls another long hop to the rope for the first four of the day.

The England openers exchange a couple more singles to cap a good first couple of overs.

1 over: England 4-0 (Vince 4, Bairstow 0)

Afghanistan hand the new ball to spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman, a ploy South Africa used effectively in England's opening game.

Vince gets off the mark with a whip off his legs for two and then takes another couple when Mujeeb strays too straight once more.

Good morning from a bright and sunny Manchester where the modern Old Trafford is looking splendid for today's match. Huge chance for James Vince this morning. He will never have a better opportunity to show that he really does have the ability for an international future in all formats.

Jason Roy will be missing for at least the next two matches and probably longer so it really is now or never for Vince. Good toss to win here. This is a used pitch so should take more turn as the game goes on. England have the chance to put a big score on the board and bat any tension there may be out of this game.

Here we go...

The two teams are out on the pitch and it's time for the national anthems.

The first ball of the days is only five minutes away.

Jonny Bairstow and James Vince will face the new ball.

Update on Jason Roy

Jason Roy said he is targeting England's clash with Australia for his comeback.

He told Sky Sports: 'I did it in West Indies and it was a lot worse. It could be way worse - the scan told me it's minimum 10 days. We've got to assess it as we go along.

'It's a huge understatement being frustrated, but I've got to keep smiling.

'We're targeting Australia but we'll see how this week goes. If this week goes to plan, then Australia. If not, then who knows. Hamstrings are such a grey area.'

Eoin Morgan is fit after a back problem. Jason Roy is out.

Good morning sports fans

Hello and welcome to Sportsmail's live coverage of England vs Afghanistan.

Eoin Morgan has just won the toss and England will bat!

He told Sky Sports: 'The wicket looks really good.. we're really looking forward to today. We have made two changes,  one forced - James Vince comes in for Jason Roy. Moeen Ali also comes in for Liam Plunkett for the balance of the side.'

Plunkett is a bit under the weather, apparently.
