The England batsmen were unstoppable when they met Afghanistan in the World Cup 2019 league game. With skipper Eoin Morgan leading from the front, the team amassed a mammoth 397 runs in 50 overs. In the process, Rashid Khan was the most affected and he was at the receiving end from the fans. Of the many who lashed out at him for this performance was Iceland Cricket. They mocked him in their tweet and Luke Wright didn’t like that at all.

In only 9 overs that he bowled, the leg-spinner leaked 110 runs at an economy rate of 12.20. Morgan particularly targetted him and went after him with some big shots. Rashid didn’t have any answers to this assault and was extremely expensive in the last four overs that he bowled. In those 24 balls, he conceded 74 runs at an economy rate of 18.5 and went for 21 runs in one of the overs.

Thus, he ended up conceding the joint second-most run in an ODI. Moreover, these were the most expensive figures by a bowler in a World Cup game. Also, the 20-year-old failed to pick up any wickets in this match.

Not funny, says Luke Wright

Iceland Cricket, in their sarcastic tweet, wrote that Rashid Khan scored the first century of World Cup 2019 for Afghanistan. They further mentioned, ‘Well batted young man.’

“We’ve just heard that Rashid Khan has scored Afghanistan’s first century of the #CWC19! Wow! 110 from 56 balls. The most runs ever scored by a bowler in the World Cup or something. Well batted young man. #ENGvAFG #AFGvENG,” tweeted Iceland Cricket.

Wright didn’t like reading this tweet and lashed out at Iceland cricket. He termed their tweet as absolutely rubbish and vented out his frustration. Wright asked them to be respectful rather than being funny to someone who has done so much for cricket. It was a wonderful gesture from the English cricketer and that is exactly the kind of support Rashid Khan needed after this kind of an outing.

“Rubbish tweet. Rather than trying to be funny why not be respectful to someone that has done so much for cricket and especially associate members,” read Luke Wright’s reply.
