Afghanistan set Bangladesh 398 to win Chattogram Test

08 Sep 2019 CricBuzz

Afghanistan have set Bangladesh an imposing 398-run target to win the one-off Test at Chattogram. The hosts made a slight tactical change and opened the chase with Liton Das instead of Soumya Sarkar and the move has yielded short-term success with the new opening pair batting out nine tricky overs before the lunch break during which they also scored 30 runs.

While bad light forced early stumps on day three, play didn't get underway for a long time on the fourth morning as well due to rain. Afghanistan, who are clearly in the driver's seat, had to endure a frustrating time for the skies to clear and when they eventually did, Yamin Ahmadzai signalled his intentions by lofting Taijul Islam over long-off for a massive six. Overnight batsman Afsar Zazai, who played a mature knock in the first innings as well, then stretched the lead to 390 after fetching a lucky boundary off a top edge.

Bangladesh were then gifted a wicket when Zazai attempted a quick single that resulted in Ahmadzai getting run out. Mushfiqur Rahim, who had squandered a run out opportunity earlier in the day, made no mistake this time. Seven balls later, Zahir Khan handed the silly point fielder an easy catch as Bangladesh managed to keep the target just below 400. In the chase, the Bangladesh openers appeared to be positive as Shadman Islam punished Mohammad Nabi's shortish deliveries for a couple of boundaries in the second over.

Rashid Khan introduced himself just before lunch to bowl a solitary over without any success but the legspinner will certainly remain the key in the post-lunch session as Bangladesh look to create history, something that looks highly unlikely at the moment.

Brief scores: Bangladesh 205 & 30/0 (Shadman Islam 21*) need another 368 runs vs Afghanistan 342 & 260 (Ibrahim Zadran 87, Asghar Afghan 50; Shakib Al Hasan 3-58)
