US President Donald Trump's decision to cancel peace talks with the Taliban is a negative signal, Russia's presidential envoy to Afghanistan said on Monday.

"This is certainly a negative signal, but at the same time we take note of remarks by [Secretary of State Mike] Pompeo and representatives of the Taliban group [outlawed in Russia]. Despite the bellicose tone of these remarks, both sides note readiness to continue dialogue," Zamir Kabulov told TASS news news agency.

"Since emotions are running high now, combat actions could escalate for some time, but we hope it won’t be long. We believe that in the final end this [negotiating] process will continue and will be successful."

The diplomat also noted that Russia and US would certainly hold contacts to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.

"We will certainly continue communicating, we and our Chinese colleagues will resume discussion on all issues of our common interest," Kabulov said.

Trump cancelled talks with Taliban leaders planned for Camp David, citing a Taliban-claimed attack in Kabul that killed 12 people including an American soldier.
