Afghan forces reclaim Kuran Wa Munjan district in north of Afghanistan

11 Sep 2019 Kabul Now

Local officials say the Afghan security forces have reclaimed northern Kuran Wa Munjan district of Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province early morning today. The district was under the control of the Taliban in the last two months.

Nik Mohamad Nazari, spokesperson for Badakhshan governor, told Etilaat Roz that clearance operations were underway in the last ten days and eventually they retook the district with the support of local people.

The security forces inflicted heavy causalities on the Taliban group, local officials claim.

So far, the insurgent group have not made comment.

The Taliban militants stormed the district in July of this year and took control of the district.

Two years ago, illegal extraction of azure mine in Kuran Wa Munjan district of Badakhshan was banned.

This came while last week the Afghan security forces retook control over Warduj and Yamgan districts, the two districts which were under Taliban control in the last five years.
