Taliban responsible for any setback in Afghan peace process: Kabul

20 Sep 2019 1TV News

Taliban are mainly responsible for any setback in Afghan peace process, Afghan president's spokesman said on Thursday.

Sediq Sediqi said that Taliban’s continued violence and attacks on people and institutions demonstrate lack of the group’s commitment to end war.

The comments come after Afghan government announced that efforts for peace were suspended until after election which is scheduled to be held late this month.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump cancelled peace talks with the Taliban, citing a deadly attack in Kabul just as the sides were close to inking an agreement.

Sediqi said that election will be held on due time, adding that the winner would work heavily on peace.

He said that for peace, Taliban should immediately stop fighting and enter into talks with the Afghan government.

Meanwhile, Afghan ambassador to US, Roya Rahmani has dismissed the idea that the peace process could continue under the current security situation.

“It’s impossible to begin the process of rebuilding trust under these conditions,” Rahmani said speaking at the United States Institute of Peace on Friday.
