Pakistan offers Taliban to agree 'unannounced ceasefire': report

21 Oct 2019 1TV News

Pakistan has been pressing the Taliban to agree to a ceasefire or at least give a commitment for reducing violence in Afghanistan, a Pakistani newspaper said on Sunday.

Citing an unidentified official, the Express Tribune said that Pakistan had suggested the Taliban to agree an “unannounced ceasefire” if they had any problem in making their decision public at this stage.

The US side endorsed the idea and indicated resuming peace talks if the Taliban were ready to give the commitment for a ceasefire in private, the paper said.

The Taliban have so far not given any response to the proposal.

US and the Taliban held months of peace talks before they were halted last month by President Donald Trump citing a deadly attack in Kabul.

The US, however, is looking to restart talks with the Taliban. US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said on Sunday that the aim was still to get a peace agreement.
