Trump awards Medal of Honor to Green Beret for actions in Afghanistan

President Trump on Wednesday awarded the Medal of Honor to an Army master sergeant who is credited with saving four wounded soldiers during an operation in Afghanistan.

The president recognized Master Sgt. Matthew Williams during a ceremony in the East Room of the White House, praising his courage and poise under pressure.

"Matt's incredible heroism helped ensure that not a single American soldier died in the battle of Shok Valley," Trump said.

Williams was given the highest military honor for his actions during a mission in April 2008, when he exposed himself to enemy gunfire multiple times while wounded members of his unit evacuated. Williams came under fire multiple times as he waded through water and up and down a mountain side to get his team members to safety.

In total, he saved the live of four critically wounded soldiers, the White House said.

Williams is still serving in the Army. He is currently assigned to Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

The ceremony took place hours after Trump tweeted out a photoshopped image of himself awarding a Medal of Honor to the dog that was injured in a recent raid that led to the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

At the start of the ceremony, Trump highlighted the special forces who carried out the al-Baghdadi raid.

"He was hit hard, the way he should have been," Trump said. "And I just want to say for all of our military, we're very proud of you."
