ECC warns IEC against fresh election results delay

With one week left to the scheduled announcement of preliminary results from presidential election, Afghanistan's Electoral Complaints Commission on Thursday warned the Independent Election Commission against further delaying the results.

Speaking at a press conference, ECC chairwoman Zuhra Bayan Shinwari said that the commission was concerned about delaying the results which were originally scheduled to be released on October 19.

She said that the IEC should not miss the new deadline which is November 14.

ECC said that delaying the announcement of the results again would be unacceptable.

IEC had cited technical problems and efforts for transparency as main reasons for delaying the results.

However, the commission is facing a deadlock due to disagreement over validity of thousands of votes and recounting.

Meanwhile, ECC said that it had made decisions on all 4,528 electoral complaints, based on which 2,118 polling station need recount.

Votes from 30 polling centers and 105 polling stations have been invalidated, it said.
