IEC's recount and audit must come to an end quite soon: NATO

04 Dec 2019 1TV News

The Independent Election Commission's recounting and auditing process must come to an end quite soon, NATO' senior civilian representative in Afghanistan, Nicholas Kay, has said.

“It is important that we see very soon a decision by the Independent Election Commission on the preliminary results,” Kay told reporters in the United Kingdom where NATO leaders are meeting.

“The commission is following its rules and procedures to check and double check, to count and to recount and to audit the whole process, but that must come to an end quite soon,” he said.

IEC has missed two deadlines for the announcement of preliminary results from presidential election which was held more than two months ago.

A new date has not been announced yet.

The commission started recounting and auditing process on November 9, but protesters have blocked the process in seven provinces claiming fraud.

Kay called for more communication between the candidates and the IEC so that the commission can explain very carefully to the candidates exactly the basis for their decisions. He also called on candidates to listen to IEC.

“When IEC makes its announcement of the preliminary results, candidates should respect its decisions,” Kay said.
