Afghanistan calls for accountability after Iran admits to shooting down plane

Afghan government has called for transparency and accountability after Iran said that it shot down Ukraine International Airlines flight 752 by "human error."

The crash which happened shortly after takeoff from Tehran airport on Wednesday and killed 176 people, including 13 Afghans.

“Given the latest announcement made by the Iranian government regarding the incident, we call on all countries affected by this tragedy to expand coordination and keep close contacts with a view to ensure both transparency and accountability as well as the provision of all the required information and assistance to the families of the victims,” Afghanistan’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

The incident came on the day Iran fired missiles at US bases in Iraq, and Tehran initially denied the plane was hit by missiles.

Afghan Acting Foreign Minister Idrees Zaman held a phone conversation with Canadian Foreign Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne and foreign ministers of other countries affected by the crash, during which they agreed to establish the International Coordination and Response Group for families of victims.
