Russian Prime Minister Demitry Medvedev announced yesterday the resignation of his government. Speaking on Russian television, Medvedev said: “The government is stepping down so that Russian President Vladimir Putin can bring about the necessary reforms in the Russian constitution and achieve lasting power as he wishes.” However, Russian media reports suggest that Russian President Vladimir Putin has chosen the next prime minister.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed to Mikhail Mishustin, head of the Russian tax service, to take over as prime minister.

Following the proposal, the Speaker of the Russian Parliament held an emergency meeting of the members of parliament.

Dmitry Medvedev served as President of Russia from 2008 to 2012, during which Vladimir Putin served as Russian Prime Minister.
