Iraq Clashes Leaves 6 Killed, 60 Injured in Capital Baghdad

(TKG) ─ At least six, including two security personnel, were killed and 60 others injured in Iraq as clashes erupted between security forces and the protesters on Monday [January 20, 2020]. Media reported, the casualties occurred on Monday as security forces were trying to disperse protesters near the Muhammad al-Qasim Highway, central Baghdad. Three protesters succumbed to their wounds at a Baghdad hospital after police fired live rounds in Tayaran Square, the sources said. Two protesters were shot by live bullets while a third was hit by a tear gas canister. A fourth protester was shot dead by police in the southern city of Kerbala, the sources added. A week back, the Iraqi government was given time until Monday to act on their demands, which included the holding of a snap poll under a new electoral law, the appointment of an independent prime minister and the prosecution of officials suspected of corruption.
