Germany, Norway offer to facilitate inter-Afghan peace dialogue: NATO chief

Germany and Norway have offered to facilitate inter-Afghan peace dialogue, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday.

“If we now see progress, if we now are able to launch inter-Afghan dialogue, then two NATO Allies have offered to facilitate that: Norway and Germany,” Stoltenberg said before the meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels.

Amid ongoing peace talks between the United States and the Taliban, Stoltenberg said that NATO would welcome any step that can lead to reduction in violence in Afghanistan.

“Taliban has to demonstrate a real will and ability to deliver reduction in violence to make it possible to have any progress towards lasting and sustainable peace solution in Afghanistan,” Stoltenberg said.

He reiterated that NATO will remain committed to supporting Afghan forces.

“We strongly believe that the best way NATO can support the peace process is to stay committed to our train, assist and advise mission in Afghanistan because when we train and support the Afghan forces not only with training but also with funding, we are helping the Afghans to send a very clear message to the Taliban that they will never win on the battlefield, they have to sit down at the negotiating table and engage in real compromises and real negotiations for peace,” Stoltenberg said.
