KABUL (SW) – NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, has said the Allies are not leaving Afghanistan, but are prepared to adjust force level if the Taliban demonstrate the will and ability to reduce violence and make real compromises.

He said this addressing the Munich Security Conference in German state of Bavaria. The NATO Secretary General said this adjustment could pave the way for negotiations among Afghans, sustainable peace, and ensuring the country is never again a safe haven for terrorists.

Stoltenberg said Europe and North America need to continue to stand together in the face of increased global competition.

He also held a meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on the sidelines of the MSC. “Important discussion with President @ashrafghani about the way forward in #Afghanistan. #NATO Allies & partners remain firmly committed to create the conditions for a sustainable peace. The Taliban need to show the will & ability to reduce violence & negotiate in good faith”, he tweeted.

According to the presidency, the NATO Secretary General assured President Ghani in this meeting that the Allies backs the Afghan-owned and Afghan-led peace process.
