Afghan, U.S. officials working on strategy for reduction in violence

KABUL (SW) – The government is working in close collaboration with the U.S. on strategy to oversight implementation of the proposed reduction in violence, presidential spokesman Sediq Sediqqi, said on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference, he said the proposed reduction in violence provides an opportunity, and the government would not turn blind eye towards the potential threats. Sediqqi said the peace talks with the Taliban would begin after a deal between the U.S. and Taliban.

He expressed hope the Taliban would undertake genuine steps towards peace. The presidential spokesman said an inclusive delegation would defend the people’s rights in peace talks with the Taliban. Referring to President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani’s recent meetings with the senior U.S. and NATO officials on the sidelines of Munich Security Conference in Germany, he said matters related to the peace process were discussed.

He said the international community reminded President Ghani of unwavering support for the Afghan security forces, Afghan people and democracy. Sediqqi stressed the world leaders promised not to allow gains of the past 19 years threatened.

The spokesman further said President Ghani would soon begin consultation process with the civil society representatives and other prominent figures on the peace process.
