(TKG) — Today, February 18, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) ultimately announced President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani as the winner of the Afghan presidential elections after a five-month delay. President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday, February 18, was declared by the IEC as the winner of Afghanistan's presidential elections after several months of delay. Following the vote recounting and special audit, in a press conference announcing the results, the election commission's chairperson Hawa Alam Nuristani declared that President Ghani had won the elections by securing 50.64% of the vote, just surpassing the 50 percent minimum required for a win. Dr. Abdullah Abdullah the other electoral candidate, however, secured 39.52%, according to the commission's chief. The disputed result was contested by opposing candidates, including Dr. Abdullah's electoral team, threatening another crisis just ahead of the U.S.-Taliban peace agreement. A senior member of Dr. Abdullah's team, Fazel Ahmad Manawi, had announced hours before the declaration of the results that "neither the institution called independent election commission has legitimacy in our eyes, nor the result they might announce."
