US, Taliban agreed on a date to sign the peace deal

21 Feb 2020 The Khaama Press News Agency

The United States and the Taliban have reached the agreement to sign a peace deal on the 29th of February 2020.

The U.S Department of State announced on Friday that the U.S and Taliban are preparing to sign the peace deal on the 29th of February which will be followed by the next step, intra-Afghan negotiations.

The United States and the Taliban have been engaged in extensive talks to facilitate a political settlement to end the war in Afghanistan, reduce United States and Allied Forces presence, and ensure that no terrorist group ever uses Afghan soil to threaten the United States or our allies.

The U.S Department of State said in a statement.

In recent weeks, in consultation with the Government of National Unity, U.S. negotiators in Doha have come to an understanding with the Taliban on a significant and nationwide reduction in violence across Afghanistan, the statement added.

Upon a successful implementation of this understanding, signing of the U.S.-Taliban agreement is expected to move forward. We are preparing for the signing to take place on February 29. Intra-Afghan negotiations will start soon thereafter, and will build on this fundamental step to deliver a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire and the future political roadmap for Afghanistan. The only way to achieve a sustainable peace in Afghanistan is for Afghans to come together and agree on the way forward.

The statement further added.

This comes as the brief one-week ‘ceasefire’ under the ‘violence-reduction’ term will start from tonight, the National Security Council said.

The National Security Council (NSC) confirmed on Friday that the one-week period of the reduction in violence – which the US and the Taliban have agreed as a pre-condition to signing a peace deal – will begin sharply at 12 am-midnight, the morning of Saturday, February 22.

After decades of conflict, we have come to an understanding with the Taliban on a significant reduction in violence accross Afghanistan. This is important step on a long road to peace, and i call on all Aghans to seize this opportunity.

Mike Pompeo, the U.S Secretary of State tweeted.

The US, Taliban peace negotiations started last February which will enter a new phase of intra-Afghan talks next month.

The Afghan leaders and politicians have not yet agreed on the delegation members.
