Abdullah’s Team Appoints ‘Acting Governor’ to Jawzjan

23 Feb 2020 Tolo News

A member of Jawzjan's Provincial Council, Abdulhai Hayat, was appointed "acting governor" of the northern province by Abdullah Abdullah’s team on Sunday.

The move comes after Abdullah’s team appointed a new governor in the northern province of Sar-e-Pul on Saturday.

The event to introduce the acting governor was held at the residence of First Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum in Sheberghan city, the center of Jawzjan.

Bashir Ahmad Tahyanj, a spokesman for the Junbish-e-Milli party, or the National Islamic Movement of Afghanistan, which supports Abdullah Abdullah’s team, said the event to appoint the acting governor was held at Dostum’s residence to prevent possible tension. Reports indicate that the governor’s office was under tight security measures and no one was allowed to enter the area.

“Heads of offices, the police chief and other officials should cooperate with the (acting) governor. This is from Abdullah Abdullah’s team. Anyone who does not accept this, we will decide about them,” said Tahyanj.

“The office of the (acting) governor is open. Share with me your problems,” said Hayat, the acting governor of Jawzjan, introduced by Abdullah's Stability and Convergence team.

Those who gathered at Dostum’s residence pledged their support for the “inclusive government,”  recently announced and led by Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah.

Jawzjan residents, meanwhile, called on political leaders to end the tension and use the current opportunity to ensure an enduring peace in the country.

“We want peace and security, no matter who is in power,” said Sibghatullah, a Jawzjan resident.

“All the shops are closed, people are jobless and hungry,” said Sayed Habib, another resident of Jawzjan.

Meanwhile, residents of Baghlan province, in the north of Afghanistan, also said that the center of the province, Pul-e-Khumri city, has transformed into a military hub over the past two days – following attempts to appoint a governor for the province by Abdullah’s team.

“Police are preventing us from walking in (certain areas). We want peace back in the city. We don’t want war,” said Tamim, a Baghlan resident.

Local officials said government offices were closed in Pul-e-Khumri because of the presence of security forces.

“Anyone who is elected by vote, he is our president and we will work under him,” said Mohammad Qadim Niazi, the acting governor of Baghlan.

“Provincial government institutions are under the control of security forces. We are trying to ensure the safety of the people,” Baghlan Police Chief Wais Samimi said.

This comes as US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad met Gen. Dostum in Jawzjan on Saturday. But little information has been provided for this meeting.
