Afghan political forces must unite behind peace process: NATO chief

26 Feb 2020 1TV News

Afghan political forces must engage in dialogue and unite behind the peace process, which is the priority for all Afghans, NATO chief said on Tuesday.

In a statement, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said that any concerns about the electoral process should be addressed according to constitutional and legal procedures.

“I call on all Afghan political actors to refrain from taking steps that would escalate tensions and undermine political stability,” Stoltenberg said. “I urge all Afghans to demonstrate national unity in support of the peace process. This is a time when all responsible political forces must engage in dialogue and unite behind the peace process, which is the priority for all Afghans.”

Stoltenberg reaffirmed commitment to Afghanistan’s long-term security and stability. “We continue to provide the Afghan security forces with training and financial support, so that they can fight terrorism and create the conditions for peace.”

Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission has declared incumbent president Ashraf Ghani as winner of the election, but his main rival Abdullah Abdullah disputed the results and vowed to form his own government.

On Tuesday, the US said that the Afghan government had agreed to postpone the presidential inauguration. It also urged Afghans to focus on peace, not electoral politics.
