Afghan government on Tuesday allocated $25 million to fight coronavirus, a day after it confirmed first case of the illness in the country.

The fund was allocated during an emergency meeting chaired by President Ashraf Ghani.

The president instructed the relevant authorities to coordinate at regional level and with international organizations to prevent the spread of the virus.

He said that the coronavirus task force should reach an understanding with the private sector on the prevention of the spread of coronavirus.

The president also called for control measures at land ports and airports. He also emphasized on the need for spreading awareness in heavily populated areas, universities and schools.

Coronavirus is believed to have originated in a market selling wildlife in the central Chinese city of Wuhan late last year and has infected about 80,000 people and killed more than 2,700, the vast majority in China.

The first coronavirus case in Afghanistan involved a 35-year-old man in Herat. Officials said that the man had been infected with the virus in Iran’s Qom city.
