U.S. Secretary of State Talks to Qatar's Deputy PM over Regional Issues

(TKG) − U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke with Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Wednesday, February 26, over bilateral ties and regional issues, said the U.S. State Department in a statement. According to a statement issued by the U.S. State Department, the two sides discussed recent regional developments, U.S.-Qatar bilateral relations, and Iran’s “destabilizing behavior” in the region. They discussed the importance of Gulf unity as a critical element to regional stability, the statement added. During their talks, Pompeo thanked Qatar’s efforts including hosting peace talks to end the war in Afghanistan. Pompeo said Tuesday, February 25, that Washington was preparing to sign a deal with Afghan Taliban “on or about Feb. 29” only after a week reduction in violence went successful. The signing ceremony of the U.S.-Taliban deal would be held in Doha, with the presence of 27 countries’ representatives the capital city of Qatar, media reports quoted Suhail Shaheen.
