U.S. Peace Negotiator Meets Afghan Leaders, Holds Talks on Peace

In a statement, the Afghan Presidential Palace said the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, Dr. Zalmay Khalilzad, has arrived in Kabul and held talks with the Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and Chairman of the High Peace Council, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, during which they spoke about further steps in the Afghan peace process. According to the statement, both sides supported a reduction in violence before the start of an intra-Afghan peace dialogue between the armed Taliban and the Afghan government.. Amb. Khalilzad said he would meet with Taliban representatives in the Qatari capital, Doha, to press for a reduction in violence, the statement further read. The prisoner swap that has been delaying peace talks was also a part of today’s discussion, highlighting the necessity of a rational mechanism by the technical teams of both sides to push the process forward. The armed Taliban and the Afghan government were expected to negotiate directly by March, but the disputed prisoner swap has delayed the talks. The Afghan government has halted the group’s prisoners release. A day earlier, the U.S. State Department announced its special representative for peace in Afghanistan, has arrived to Qatar to press for peace process and reduction in hostilities in the country.
