Some Taliban members oppose peace process and are carrying out deadly attacks in cooperation with with terrorist groups, a former head of Afghanistan's intelligence agency said on Thursday.

Rahmatullah Nabil, former head of National Directorate of Security, told 1TV that the Qatar-based Taliban leaders might not favour some of the attacks that its fighters carry out, but still they justify them for unity of the group.

According to Nabil, some circles in Taliban believe that they could seize power through military means as foreign troops exit Afghanistan.

He said that these circles have links with Daesh and Lashkar-i-Taiyba and are supported by circles in Pakistan.

Meanwhile, a Pentagon watchdog in a report to the Congress has said that Pakistan has encouraged the Afghan Taliban to participate in peace talks, but refrained from applying coercive pressure that would seriously threaten its relationship with the Afghan Taliban to dissuade the group from conducting further violence.

"Pakistan continues to harbor the Taliban and associated militant groups in Pakistan, such as the Haqqani Network, which maintains the ability to conduct attacks against Afghan interests," the report said.
