Afghan Senate Calls on Warring Parties to Take Practical Steps to Ensure Lasting Peace in Afghanistan

31 May 2020 The Killid Group

Scores of Senate members said today in the House’s plenary session that with a political settlement reached between Afghan leaders, the intra-Afghan peace negotiations were now expected to begin. Hanif Hanafi, a member of the Afghan Senate (Meshrano Jirga) said in the House that all warring parties should meet their commitments to accelerate the Afghan peace process and end the ever longest conflict in the country. Gul Ahmad Azimi, Farah’s representative in the Upper House, meanwhile, spoke that a political agreement struck between President Ghani and his ex-political rival Dr. Abdullah Abdullah has allayed people’s concerns, yet its results in the peace process was still tangible. He reiterated that the international community ought to effectively monitor and guarantee the ceasefire and ensuring a lasting peace. Gulalai Akbari, a member of the Afghan Senate for the people of Badakhshan, however, said that the Afghan government accepted all of the Taliban’s demands, while the group hasn’t responded to the government’s demands so far. Nonetheless, as a part of efforts for peace in Afghanistan and a goodwill gesture, the Afghan government has so far released more than 2,600 of the Taliban prisoners since an agreement was reached between the U.S. and the Taliban. In response, a total of 420 Afghan government prisoners have been released by the Taliban, as the group’s political spokesman announced on his Twitter account. The armed Taliban, however, says the number of group’s prisoners provided by the Afghan government isn’t correct, saying as many as 2,284 of its captives have been released so far.
