Ghani, Pompeo discuss next steps in peace process

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani spoke with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo via video link on Monday, discussing the next steps in peace process.

The video conference was attended also by head of High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah, US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, Resolute Support commander Scott Miller and other officials.

Both sides discussed joint efforts to ensure peace and stability in Afghanistan, according to a statement from the president's office.

Pompeo said that the main objective of US is a united, sovereign, democratic and stable Afghanistan in the framework of continuing longterm and strategic relations between the two countries.

Ghani explained the government's roadmap for reaching sustainable peace and stability and called for more efforts for a stable, united and sovereign Afghanistan.

They discussed and analyzed next steps on peace including release of prisoners and venue of negotiations.

They emphasized on joint cooperation on reporting during peace negotiations.

They agreed that next steps in peace should be worked on in the next days and the Afghan government emphasized on mechanism for an undeclared ceasefire that would determine rules of the game.
