COVID-19 infections in Afghanistan rose by 684% in May, the International Rescue Committee said in a report Monday. “The country’s extremely low testing capacity means many more are going untested and undetected,” according to the Committee. The Committee has expressed concern over the undetected cases in Afghanistan, saying the health ministry of Afghanistan “only has capacity to test 2,000 cases per day,” while receive between 10,000 and 20,000 samples each day. This indicates that between “80 and 90 percent of potential cases are not being tested.” The war-ravaged Afghanistan is already hit by insecurity and sufferes from poverty and now COVID-19 pandemic faces the country with, according to the report, a “humanitarian disaster”.
