Balkh Sees Surge in Coronavirus Related Deaths, Concerns Grown among Residents

02 Jun 2020 The Killid Group

According to health officials in the northern Balkh province, the COVID-19 death rate is increasing sharply in the province, yet its residents are reluctant to take the virus serious. Dr. Nizamuddin Jalil, head of Balkh’s health department, has raised concern over a sharp surge in COVID-19 deaths as, according to him, at least 40 patients having been contracted with the coronavirus disease have lost their lives. As of today, as many as 46 patients have recovered from the illness while the provincial case count stood at more than 1,100, he continued. The actual infection toll from COVID-19 is likely to be higher than the confirmed cases since the number of patients were just the individuals who got tested in the 200-bed COVID-19 hospital of the province. People of the province quarantine themselves at home as they get the coronavirus symptoms and are afraid to seek care at hospital, residents of Balkh said. They, however, are not happy with doctors treating the COVID-19 illness and accuse them of recklessness. It comes amid a recent report by International Rescue Committee (IRC) indicated that in Afghanistan with extremely low capacity of testing, many COVID-19 patients go untested and detected. The Committee on Monday warned that Afghanistan faces a “humanitarian disaster” as COVID-19 spreads rapidly in the country.
