Top Afghan security official dies of coronavirus in Kunduz province

A top official of the Afghan National Police (ANP) forces died of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in northern Kunduz province of Afghanistan.

Tariq Arian, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, confirmed that the police chief of Kunduz, Abdul Rashid Bashir, died of coronavirus.

According to Arian, Bashir contracted the disease a while ago and was undergoing treatment before he lost his life.

This comes as the deadly coronavirus is rapidly spreading across the country including capital Kabul where the authorities have recently recorded hundreds of positive cases.

According to Ministry of Public of Health, the public health authorities have so far recorded 16,509 positive cases of the novel coronavirus across the country since the spread of the disease.

The ministry also added that 270 people who had contracted the virus lost their lives while 1,450 others have recovered.
