At least 23 civilians were killed after a car bomb exploded and rockets were fired in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province on Monday, officials said.

Helmand governor's office in a statement said that militants fired four rockets at a bazaar in Sangin district, as a result of which a car bomb exploded there.

It said that militants were making rockets and car bombs close to civilian populated area.

Two Taliban militants were also killed in the car bomb blast. 15 civilians were wounded, the statement said.

Taliban spokesman Yosuf Ahmadi said that the casualties happened due to shelling by government forces, a claim officials denied.
