07 Jul 2020 The Killid Group

A second trilateral meeting was held between Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China on Tuesday (July 07), said the foreign ministry’s spokesperson, Gran Hewad, speaking at a press conference. Security and economic cooperation, and the peace process as well as the release of prisoners were the topic of discussion among the participants, according to Mr. Hewad. China and Pakistan hailed the release of prisoners by both the Afghan government and the Taliban, said Mr. Hewad, adding the two neighboring countries urged the insurgent group to lower the level of violence and start the direct peace negotiations. Members of the Afghan Senate and political experts, meanwhile, believe Pakistan has an important role in such sort of meetings and conferences. Gulalai Akbar, a Senate member said that Pakistan holds the key to peace in Afghanistan and it should play its role in the peace process with honesty. A number of political analysts, likewise, maintain that countries in the region can play a vital role in bringing peace and stability in Afghanistan. Success of the peace process depends on support of the regional countries, said Ali Fayez, a political affairs expert. Referring to the trilateral meeting, Mr. Fayez reiterated this sort of gatherings won’t be productive unless they take place within a strategic framework. Afghanistan hosted the first meeting that was held via video a day earlier (July 6), aiming at building regional and international consensus in support of the Afghan peace process. A third meeting will be attended by Afghanistan’s major international partners and the countries which provided support for Afghanistan in security and economic fields for over the past 19 years.
