09 Jul 2020 The Killid Group

The Taliban chief negotiator and the deputy leader of the group, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, has met with Markus Potzel, the Special Representative of Germany for Afghanistan and his delegation in Doha, tweeted Suhail Shaheen, a spokesman for the group. The participants discussed the “implementation of Doha Agreement, release of prisoners and withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan” as well as the start of the long-delayed intra-Afghan talks and the Afghan peace process, according to the group’s spokesperson. The Taliban speaks of the meeting at a time the Afghan government earlier announced it wouldn’t release nearly 600 of the Taliban’s prisoners who were behind certain serious crimes. Under a peace deal struck between the United States and the Taliban, the Afghan government is set to release 5,000 Taliban prisoners while the insurgents to free 1,000 captives of the government before the intra-Afghan negotiations begin. The direct talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban group were scheduled to begin in the middle of July, according to reports; they are, however, yet to begin due to a delay in fulfilling the process of prisoner exchanges.
