Loya Jirga Resolution Backs Release of 400 Taliban prisoners

Peace consultative Loya Jirga (grand assembly) issued a 25-article resolution, approving the release of 400 dangerous Taliban prisoners.

Peace consultative Loya Jirga (grand assembly) issued a 25-article resolution, approving the release of 400 dangerous Taliban prisoners.
“Jirga approves the release of 400 Taliban prisoners in order to remove obstacles to the start of peace talks, to stop the bloodshed and to serve the common good,” said article 2 of the resolution.

In Article 5 of the Loya Jirga’s resolution called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in the country and called on the international community, especially the United States, to live up to its obligations to the people of Afghanistan.
Article 7 of the resolution also calls on the Taliban to fulfill their obligation and release all government and civilian prisoners as soon as possible.

Article 9 of the Loya Jirga Resolution calls on the international community to prevent interference of countries which are directly and indirectly involved in the destabilization of Afghanistan.
Preserving and strengthening the Islamic values, democracy and achievements of the Afghan people over the past two decades are other demands of the Loya Jirga. The Jirga also stated that the principle of democracy and republic establishment and the fundamental rights of citizens, especially ethnic, and religious minorities, not to be harmed in the peace talks.

The Peace Consultative Loya Jirga was convened on Aug. 7 to advise on the fate of the remaining 400 Taliban prisoners. The closing session of the jirga was held Sunday with the participation of President Ashraf Ghani and a number of political figures of the country.
