KANDAHAR (SW) – A roadside bomb blast in Kandahar killed at least five family members of a local police commander named Ghamay Aagha.

Jamal Nasir Barakzai, spokesman for the police headquarters, said the incident took place in Zalkhan area of Panjwai district. He added the mother, father, two sisters and a daughter of Aagha got killed and six others were injured in this blast. He added these people were on their way to attend a family gathering when their car hit the roadside improvised explosive device.

Ghamay Aagha has gained a reputation on social media for his resemblance to General Abdul Raziq, the slain police chief for the restive province.

The President's office condemned the blast in a statement and called on the Taliban to refrain from planting landmines in the run-up to peace talks with the government.

The statement said President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani deplored the attack and called on the Taliban to stop the violence, especially landmines, which are the main cause of civilian casualties. President Ghani urged the Taliban to respond positively to the calls of peace by the consultative Loya Jirga.
