Abdullah Abdullah, Afghanistan’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) urged the continued support of international community in demining of mined areas in Afghanistan. Talking at a gathering for celebration of “International Awareness Raising Day for Demining and Mine Action Support,” at GMIC on Tuesday, April 3, at GMIC, CEO urged all the government agencies to cooperation in the demining process and in helping the victims of mine explosions. CEO insisted that the government remains faithful to the promises it has made to the people of Afghanistan and international community in demining. He said that many countries have supported and helped Afghanistan in demining, yet much needs to be done in this area. Meanwhile, Najib Aqa Fahim, State Minister for natural disasters affairs also urged the international community to continue their support for Afghanistan in demining process. He regretted the fact that donor’s support for demining in Afghanistan has seen decrease since 2011.  According to him, statistics reveal that the international community has sponsored only 40 percent of the demining budget in Afghanistan for 2017. He added: “If this trend continues, the target for completion of demining until 2023 will not be achieved.” According to him, there are still mines planted in 270 areas and 17 provinces, covering an area of 421 square kilometer. He also added that since the initiation of demining programs in Afghanistan in 1989, 25,401 mine plantations that covered an area of 30 thousand square kilometers have been cleared of mines. This includes, according to him, a total of 2980 villages and 129 districts. According to him, during this 30-year period 19 million mines have been identified and defused. On December 08, 2005, the United Nations announced April 4 as the International Day for Awareness Raising on Dangers of Mines which is celebrated and various countries, particularly the countries that are victims of mines.
