An Afghan father has spoken of the abuse he received for naming his son Donald Trump in honor of the US president.Sayed Assadullah said young Donald's blond hair sealed the deal when he was born in Daikundi in central Afghanistan on September 3, 2016. At the time, Trump was preparing to take part in the first presidential debate after winning the Republican Party nomination. Scroll down for video

While his wife, Jamila, agreed to the name, his family and neighbors were not so understanding. His family first treated the choice of name as a joke, but humor soon turned to anger over Assadullah's decision to pick a non-Muslim name But Assadullah was already a fan of the president-to-be's work, telling The New York Times: 'I was reading Trump's books - I read his book "How to Get Rich". 'Then I read about his background: about how he built the Trump Tower, how he became the leader of the party. I understood that he is a hardworking man. 'I thought if I name my son Donald Trump, then it will affect my son's personality, his behavior.'While his wife, Jamila, agreed to the name, his family and neighbors were not so understanding.His family first treated the choice of name as a joke, but humor soon turned to anger over Assadullah's decision to pick a non-Muslim name.

'When I named my son Donald Trump, they were not happy,' he said. 'They told me, "How you can select the name of an infidel for your son?"' Assadullah said he had come to admire Trump after watching him on a solar-powered television and hoped some of the tycoon's good fortune would rub off onto his son. But the boy's hair was also a strong motivating factor. 'When my son was born, his hair was completely blond, and it matched Trump's hair,' he said. 

'When I named my son Donald Trump, they were not happy,' Asadullah said. 'They told me, "How you can select the name of an infidel for your son?"'

In an interview with Radio Free Europe , the proud father said his 18-month-old boy (pictured) was 'very bright' like his namesake'So when I saw his hair, I thought, "I will name him Trump".'But the intolerant abuse from his family - especially his father, who he says is 'an angry man' - pushed him to leave his village and head to the Afghan capital, Kabul.Even there, however, Assadullah said he is treated with disrespect - with workers at the intelligence agency questioning him. They said he was a 'culture-less' person for naming his son after a non-Muslim. But in an interview with Radio Free Europe, the proud father said his 18-month-old boy was 'very bright' like his namesake. According to The Times, a separate family in Afghanistan said they named their twins Vladimir Putin and Barack Hussein Obama - but the paper was not able to verify the claim.
