A senior Taliban commander has been killed by Afghan forces in western Farah province, an official said Monday.

Ibrahim, also known as Jubair, was killed along with 37 other militants in counterattack in Pusht-i-Rod district, Fazl Ahmad Sherzad, the provincial police chief, told 1TV.

The insurgents had launched attacks on checkpoints in the district around 1:30a.m.

Foreign forces assisted the Afghan forces with air power in the counterattack, the official said.

Farah has become a scene of deadly battles recently. Afghan forces also suffered casualties in the recent clash, but with a low number, according to the official.

Farah is located near the border with Iran. Local officials have previously accused the neighbouring country of providing support to insurgents in the province.
