Afghan government on Tuesday expressed concern over opening of U.S. embassy in Jerusalem, warning it could have unpleasant outcomes.

“As a member of the Islamic world, the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan considers transfer of the US Embassy from Israel to Jerusalem, Palestine a source of concern for the Afghan people and the Islamic world,” Afghanistan’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Describing Jerusalem as the first direction of prostration, the statement said that the latest move “disturbs the feelings of Muslims around the world.”

It said that that the feelings of Muslims must be respected based on the international laws, approvals of the United Nations, warning the move further challenges the Middle East peace process.

“The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan stands with the international consensus in regard with Palestine and continues its support for the rights of the people of that country, ensuring just and stable peace, and creation of an independent Palestinian state,” the statement said.

It added that the Afghan government had shared the concern with the U.S. and wants the issue to be “reconsidered as it can have unpleasant outcomes.”

U.S. President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December and vowed to relocate U.S. embassy to the city.

Dozens of Palestinian demonstrators have been killed by Israeli forces following the opening of the embassy.
