No evidence to suggest Iran supports Taliban: Farah governor

Amid Taliban attack on Afghanistan's western city of Farah, provincial governor said on Tuesday that there was no evidence to suggest that the neighbouring Iran supports the Taliban.

Taliban started their offensive around 1:00 a.m. and the provincial governor said late in the evening that the battle was still ongoing.

Local officials reportedly said that the insurgents targeted government buildings and that the provincial governor had left the city.

Governor Abdul Basir Salangi told 1TV that major part of the city was under government control.

“Key facilities including NDS headquarters, governor’s office, police HQ, prison, bank and hospital are being controlled by the government, the battle is ongoing,” Salangi said via telephone.

He said that reinforcement forces were arriving in the city.

Taliban fighters reportedly carried heavy weapons and night-vision equipment during attack on the city and residents claimed that Iran provides support to the group.

Governor Salangi said that there was no evidence to suggest Iran supports the Taliban,
