Iran is funding and equipping Taliban insurgents in western Farah province, provincial police chief said Wednesday.

The remarks come a day after militants attacked provincial capital city, also Farah, and briefly seized some areas.

“Iran directly interferes… insecurity in Farah is in the interest of Iran… Iran is fully funding and equipping the Taliban in Farah,” said Fazl Ahmad Shirzad, police chief of Farah.

Farah province, which is near the border with Iran, has seen heavy battles in recent months. Taliban’s major attack on the provincial capital happened three weeks after announcing their annual spring offensive.

More than 200 Taliban fighters killed in recent clashes. 25 government troops also lost their lives, according to officials.

Earlier, residents also claimed that Iran supports the Taliban in Farah. However, provincial governor, Abdul Basir Salangi, said that there was no evidence of Iran’s support to the group.
