58 individuals arrested in connection with ID card forgery

KABUL (SW) – The Attorney General Office (AGO) noted on Thursday up to 58 individuals have been taken into custody by the law enforcement authorities on charges of forging identity cards in connection with the forthcoming elections.

Jamshed Rasuli, spokesman for the AGO, told journalists here the culprits wished to make quick money by forging the Independent Election Commission (IEC) stickers on fake identity cards for the elections. He added a total of 24 cases of forgery in this connection have been registered in the capital Kabul and provinces. The AGO spokesman said these cases would be swiftly reviewed and processed at courts.

A notable number of such cases of identity card forgeries took place in Kabul, Parwarn, Nangarhar, Kunar, Herat, Faryab, Sar-i-Pul, Kandahar, Kunduz, Khost and Paktia provinces.

In line with the election laws and the Penal Code, electoral violations are considered as crimes and the cases are referred by the Independent Election Complaint Commission (IECC) to the AGO which ultimately refers it to the corresponding courts for deliberation.
