U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made surprise visit to Afghan capital Kabul on Monday.

It marked Pompeo's first visit to Afghanistan as U.S. Secretary of State.

The diplomat met with President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah.

He reiterated Washington's call for peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban, according to the Associated Press.

He said the U.S. is committed to supporting an Afghan-led peace process under which the Taliban could return to the fold if they renounce terrorism, cut ties to al-Qaida extremists and accept the principles of Afghanistan's constitution.
