At least 34 people were killed when two suicide bombers targeted a Shiite mosque in Afghanistan's eastern Paktia province on Friday, officials said.

The attack hit Khwaja Hasan mosque in the provincial capital city Gardez, where worshipers had gathered for Friday prayers.

The attackers were disguised as women and as they entered the mosque they opened fire on worshippers before blowing themselves up.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack which is the latest in a series of attacks on Shiite mosques in Afghanistan. Previous such attacks have been claimed by the Islamic State militant group.

President Ashraf Ghani condemned the latest attack. He reiterated that such attacks cannot create disunity among religious groups.
