Ireland bundled out for 124 in series decider

31 Aug 2018 CricBuzz

On a tough batting surface, Afghanistan applied constant pressure and bowled out the hosts for a paltry 124 in the series decider played in Belfast, on Friday (August 31).

Ireland, who opted to bat, got off to an inauspicious start. Aftab Alam got the ball to seam around and removed Paul Stirling in the third over of the match with an outswinger. He added one more wicket to his tally in the first powerplay when he induced skipper Porterfield into a false stroke. The hosts were reduced to 34/2 in the ninth over.

The home team's misery extended when Afghanistan's second seamer - Gulbadin Naib - trapped Niall O'Brien and the in-form Andrew Balbirnie within a span of five deliveries. At 39/4, Simi Singh was joined in the crease by Kevin O'Brien. Just when the duo got going, Asghar Afghan introduced his star spinner into the attack - Rashid Khan. The leg-spinner didn't disappoint his skipper as he removed both the set batsmen off successive deliveries - thanks to two googlies.

Gary Wilson and Andy McBrine ensured that their team breached the 100-run mark and just when a partnership started to flourish, Asghar decided to bring himself into the attack and caught Wilson plumb in front off his very first ball. Wilson's dismissal opened the floodgates and the Ireland lower order succumbed to spin. Rashid and Nabi made a mockery of the tail as Ireland capitulated for 124 from 109/6.

Afghanistan have been iffy with the bat in this series. However, a couple of decent partnerships will ensure a series victory for Asghar's men.

Brief scores: Ireland 124 (Gary Wilson 23; Rashid Khan 3/18, Aftab Alam 2/22) vs Afghanistan.
