India-Afghanistan trade and investment show opens in Mumbai

The second annual India-Afghanistan International Trade and Investment Show kicked off in the Indian city of Mumbai on Wednesday.

The four-day event is held under the aegis of the U.S. Agency for International Development, governments of India and Afghanistan.

It will showcase Afghan business and investment opportunities and bolster international trade, according to official. Around 200 Afghan businesses, 1,200 Indian and 100 international business leaders are taking part in the event.

“Historic trade and business ties between India and Afghanistan are proving to hold strong,” Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah said at the inauguration of event. “They form a foundational bloc in the overall context of deep bilateral relations that we enjoy, mainly because we share a vision for peace, freedom, growth, cooperation and prosperity that offers a better alternative to violence, terror, extremism and stagnation.”

He said that the Afghan government aims recapture “our domestic market increase productivity and improve the value and volume of exports.”

Meanwhile U.S. charge d’affairs to India, MaryKay Charlson, said that his country appreciates India’s “important contribution to stability in Afghanistan especially in economic assistance and development.”

“This event helps fulfill commitments our leaders made to the citizens of all three countries,” he said.
